PRS CE24 Electric -- click for additional photos

PRS CE-24 Electric - The Paul Reed Smith CE-24 model is substantially similar to a PRS Custom 24, but with a bolt-on maple neck for a snappier sound. It arrived on the scene in 1988, and still comes with the patented PRS Tremolo bridge, locking tuners, and the beautifully carved, figured maple top that is a PRS hallmark.

Paul Reed Smith CE 24 Maple Top Electric Guitar Features:

  • Bolt-on 24-fret maple neck for classic maple neck clarity
  • Comfortable wide-thin neck carve
  • 25" scale length, 10" radius fretboard
  • Friction-resistant "unobtanium" nut
  • Abalone dot inlays (bird inlays by special order)
  • Maple-topped, one-piece mahogany body
  • Gorgeous "dipped in glass" clearcoat finish
  • HFS Vintage Treble/Bass pickup combination
  • Coil-tapping 5-way rotary pickup selector with volume and tone controls
  • PRS tremolo with locking tuners
  • Paul Reed Smith signature logo headstock
  • Tolex covered rectangular hard case
  • Made in USA

Historical notes:

Early versions featured an alder body, then alder with a maple cap, then a mahogany body with an optional maple cap, and for 2008, a choice of an alder body (CE24 Alder) or a mahogany body with maple cap (CE24 Maple Top).

An optional maple fretboard was available from 1988-1990. The earliest model headstocks were labelled "PRS Electric" instead of the now-familar PRS signature logo.

Beginning in 1994, the CE-22 -- a 22-fret version -- was introduced. Aside from the obvious fewer number of frets, the CE-22 shipped with Dragon II covered humbucking pickups.

By approximately 2005, the black headstock overlay (see large photo) was changed over to natural maple.

The CE series was discontinued in 2008. The January 2008 PRS retail price for the CE24 Maple Top model was $3060 US. Retail price of the CE24 Alder model was $2700 US. Gold hardware was available for both models at $240 additional.

The CE24 was a favorite of Alex Lifeson from Rush. The current Paul Reed Smith Johnny Hiland Signature model is a substantially similar alternative.
